Denture Care

In order to enjoy a good service from your dentures, you need to become used to them and complete regular maintenance. By following our guidelines, you will be able to maintain full efficiency and comfort with your new dentures. It’s important to keep in mind that dentures can never be as efficient as natural teeth, but with careful use and maintenance you will obtain satisfactory functionality.

How to insert and remove your dentures

Ask your dental prosthetist how to place and remove dentures. You should receive this information before leaving the denture clinic.

Adapting to your new dentures

Even if you’ve used dentures before, the new one will feel odd in the beginning. It takes some time for your mouth to get used to the new denture. Here is some useful advice:

  • Start with soft and crisp foods, such as vegetables
  • Take small bites and chew slowly
  • Bite on your natural teeth as much as possible
  • Bite at the corners of the mouth rather than with your front teeth
  • Chew on both sides at the same time if possible

How to do the overnight care

Dentures should be removed at night and placed in a glass of water. This way your mouth will rest and you will avoid grinding your teeth while sleeping. Your prosthetist will advise on suitable cleaning agents for your dentures.

Oral hygiene when using dentures

It’s important to maintain good oral health and to avoid losing other teeth. For this reason, you’ll need to be very careful with oral hygiene – your dental prosthetist will recommend you to use a tooth brush and dental floss after every meal to eliminate food particles and plaque.

Maintaining your dentures

Follow these rules and you’ll be able to use your dentures for a longer time:

  • Clean the dentures after each meal to remove plaque and food particles
  • Use a soft brush and soap to brush both the inside and outside surfaces
  • If you wear glasses, wear them while cleaning the dentures and make sure you have good light
  • When cleaning your dentures, place a towel or water in the basin to avoid damage in case you drop the dentures

What NOT to use for cleaning:

  • Abrasives
  • Hot water
  • Bleach
  • Antiseptics
  • Methylated spirits

What to do if you break your dentures

Stop wearing the dentures. Make an appointment to your prosthetist. Don’t try to repair the dentures by yourself using glue. This can cause further damage to the denture and make it more difficult to repair the denture correctly. If a clasp is damaged, don’t bend it or modify it to avoid breaking it.

How to get rid of tartar build-up

Soak the dentures in white vinegar for an hour. If this doesn’t work, make an appointment to a denture clinic to have the dentures cleaned and re-polished.
